4. Contact Rep. Chellie Pingree and express your concerns

Take a moment to either call or e-mail Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME). Try all three office numbers if you are having trouble reaching a person by phone. Leave a voicemail if you fail to reach anyone.

Here is a rough outline of what you might say/email (amend as desired, but definitely change the bold areas):

Hi Honorable Rep. Pingree,

I’m reaching out as a concerned citizen and (PROFESSIONAL/CONSUMER/ETC) in the hemp industry. I’m concerned about your bill, the Hemp Advancement Act of 2022 (HR 6645), which contains language that will personally harm me (and my business, IF APPLICABLE). Specifically, I’m concerned about the language that would ban delta-8 because (INPUT REASONING / financial / medical / personal).

I’m also concerned about the new definition for “Finished Hemp Products,” which will prevent farmers from selling their flower crops. Your proposed definition of 0.3% total THC is actually a backwards step from the current limit of 0.3% delta-9. Because no properly dried, cured, and trimmed CBD flower is below 0.3% total THC, this has the potential to kill the flower market.

Please consider adopting a definition of 1% delta-9 + THCa for hemp and other finished products, so that the smokable flower and delta-8 markets may remain active, while still providing relief to the entire industry.

Thank you,

We highly encourage you customize and change up the verbiage, but here is an example of what you might convey to your local congressperson:

Hi Congressman/woman Joe Smith

I’m reaching out as one of your concerned constituents. One of your colleagues, Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME), has introduced a bill, the Hemp Advancement Act of 2022 (HR 6645), which will significantly harm me as a (BUSINESS OWNER/CONSUMER). If this bill passes in its current form, it has the potential to (EXPLAIN NEGATIVE IMPACTS. ie financial harm; loss of access for medicine; loss of investment in nursery/storefront)

I’m also concerned about the new proposed definition for “Finished Hemp Products,” which will prevent farmers from selling their currently legal hemp crops and ban delta-8 products (adjust to your primary concerns). I have reached out to Rep. Pingree to express my concerns, but they may mean more coming from my representative. Please consider discussing this matter with Rep. Pingree.

Thank you for your time on this matter. I’m happy to discuss it further, if necessary.
